In the coastal village of Gruissan, France, stands the Château de Barberousse, a castle ruin. It is the remnant of a fortress, located to monitor access to the port of Narbonne and protect the city from seaborn attacks.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the late 10th century, when it was built to observe the coastline and defend against invasions. In the 12th century, the fortifications underwent an expansion, which occurred under the aegis of the Archbishops of Narbonne, particularly under Guillaume de Broa. Its military importance waned in the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu ordered the demolition of the complex, after which it was left to decay.
