The castle's origins lie in the 11th century. The structures visible today primarily date from the 12th and 16th centuries, supplemented by other architectural elements from various medieval periods. The castle was demolished on Richelieu's orders, which shaped its current ruined state. It was once surrounded by a protective wall, the course of which is still discernible today.
