West of the village of Bury in the Belgian province of Hainaut lies the Château de Bitremont, a castle ruin. Originally a moated castle, it is now surrounded by a rectangular moat.

History+

Bitremont's history began in the 12th century as the seat of a seigneury. The estate belonged to families such as Enghien, Argenteau, and Merode. Later, the noble family Visart de Bocarmé acquired the castle. On September 5, 1753, the lordship of Bitremont was elevated to a county for Louis-François Visart. A fire in April 1998 severely damaged the castle's residential building, turning it into a ruin.
