Château de Bourscheid

The origins of Château de Bourscheid stretch far back in time. Archaeological findings suggest that around the year 1000, a stone castle was built on the site of an older wooden fortification. The castle was first documented in 1095 as the property of Bertram von Bourscheid, a vogt of Echternach Abbey. Until 1512, the castle remained in the possession of the Lords of Bourscheid, who played a significant role in the retinue of the Count of Luxembourg. After the death of Bernhard IV von Bourscheid, the lordship passed to his sisters, bringing it into the possession of several families. In 1626, Hans Gerhard von Metternich unified all shares. After several generations, Hugo Franz Wolf von Metternich sold the lordship in 1753 due to financial reasons. Following a legal dispute, Maria Theresia von Eltz-Rodendorf gradually acquired all shares. Her son had the complex auctioned off in 1812, after which it fell into disrepair. It was not until 1972 that the Luxembourgish state acquired the ruin and began its renovation.

Château de Bourscheid is located in the municipality of Bourscheid in the canton of Diekirch, in the Diekirch region of Luxembourg. It sits at an elevation of approximately 357 meters above sea level.

Today, the ruins of Château de Bourscheid are a publicly accessible attraction. Visitors can explore the extensive walls and gain an impression of the complex's former grandeur. The castle is managed by the Friends of Bourscheid Castle.
