The remains of the Castle can be visited

In the French region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Château de Bressuire is a castle complex rising on a plateau, which was once a strategically important point in the conflicts between England and France.

History+

The origins of settlement on the castle grounds date back to the Celtic era. The current castle was probably founded around the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries by the Beaumont family. Its first documented mention is found in 1029. For three centuries, due to its strong position, the fortress played a decisive military role in the battles in Poitou. Until the beginning of the 16th century, the castle remained in the possession of the Beaumont-Bressuire family. The visible remains today mainly date from the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th centuries.
