Château de Briord

The Château de Briord is a neoclassical château located in Port-Saint-Père, in the Loire-Atlantique department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France, in the heart of the Pays de Retz, about 25 km southwest of Nantes.
The seigneury of Briord is documented from the 13th century. The first known lord was Séris de Rezay (around 1225). Under Martin de Rezay the domain was elevated to the rank of high justice in 1437. In 1468 it was acquired by Pierre Landais, treasurer of the Duke of Brittany, who built a fortified manor; traces of the moats and the former drawbridge site remain visible.
In 1725 Françoise de Lespinay married Jean Charette. Their descendant Joseph Charette de Briord (a relative of the famous Vendéen general François Athanase Charette de La Contrie) demolished the old manor and built the present château in 1770 in the neoclassical style. The building is constructed with a granite base, schist walls, tuffeau façades and decorative elements, and slate roofs. It comprises about 1,200 m² over four levels (including cellars and attics) and is considered one of the finest “folies nantaises” of the region, though it was designed from the outset as a principal residence rather than a mere country retreat.
During the French Revolution the domain was seized. It later passed through various owners, including Jean-Anne Dubois-Violette and, in the 19th century, the Voruz family, who modernised the château (introducing running water and electricity) without altering its essential character. In the 20th century it was used more sporadically as a country house. The interior decoration was awarded a prize at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The château and parts of the domain have been protected as a Monument historique since 1980.
The estate covers more than 53 hectares of forests, gardens, orchards and farmland and benefits from ZNIEFF Type 1 classification for its ecological interest. It includes a chapel, a dovecote (colombier), stables and other outbuildings.
Acquired in February 2022 by entrepreneur Éric Peters, the château is undergoing an extensive restoration aimed at returning it to its pre-1930 appearance. Projects include the recreation of historic gardens and an orchard of ancient fruit varieties, the restoration of the dovecote and chapel, and the creation of cultural and gastronomic activities, with the ambition of making Briord a landmark of the Pays de Retz.
