Château de Brousse
The Château de Brousse is an impressive castle complex, rising on a rocky spur in the commune of Brousse-le-Château. Originally built in the 10th century, it has been repeatedly redesigned and restored over the centuries, always maintaining its historical significance as a watch post over the Tarn crossing.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 10th century, with its first documented mention in 935. It served to monitor the Tarn crossing and was owned by various noble families, including the Counts of Rouergue and later the Counts of Rodez. For over five centuries, the Arpajon family shaped the castle's history. In the 14th century, the castle was partially burned down after Jean I of Arpajon abducted a young woman who later became his second wife. A tragic event occurred in 1404 when Jean, the Viscount of Armagnac, was imprisoned in the dungeon tower and died there. In the 18th century, the castle changed hands several times before being sold to the municipality in 1839. From 1963, an association began extensive restoration work.
