The Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux is a castle complex in the French region of Occitanie. Widely visible due to its striking red walls, it is one of the historical structures in Quercy.

History+

The origins of the Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux date back to 1100, when Hugues, Baron of Castelnau, began building a defensive wall around his estate. He was the ancestor of the Castelnau family, who, as vassals of the Counts of Toulouse, controlled a region. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, the castle was expanded several times and adapted to the requirements of artillery. In 1159, it briefly fell to Henry II of England but returned to the possession of the Barons of Castelnau after the Hundred Years' War.
