Château de Castelnaud

The first confirmed mention of Castelnaud Castle dates back to 1214, when Simon IV de Montfort conquered it during the Albigensian Crusade and handed it over to the French King Philip II. During the Hundred Years' War, the castle was of great strategic importance due to its exposed but difficult-to-capture position and changed hands multiple times. In 1259, through the Treaty of Paris between Louis IX of France and Henry III of England, it became part of English possessions in Aquitaine. In 1442, the French King Charles VII successfully besieged the castle. After this period, the Caumont family exercised dominion over Castelnaud until the French Revolution. From 1489, the castle lost its military relevance and served as a representative residence.
