Château de Châlus-Chabrol

The castle's origins date back to the 11th century when the Viscounts of Limoges built it as a border fortification against the County of Périgord. These viscounts consistently sought to maintain their independence from the Dukes of Aquitaine, often leading to military conflicts. Such a conflict escalated in 1199 when Viscount Adémar V rebelled against Richard the Lionheart. During the siege of the castle on March 25, Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded by an arrow or crossbow bolt and died a few days later. Chroniclers like Rigord later reported that Lionheart besieged the castle because a knight of the viscount had discovered and hidden a gold treasure there, which Lionheart claimed. These accounts led to the legend of Lucius Capreolus, who supposedly built the castle and amassed a vast treasure there. In the mid-13th century, the castle was sold to Géraud de Maulmont. Later, it passed through the hands of the House of Albret and was given as a dowry to Cesare Borgia. His descendants held the title "Count of Bourbon-Châlus" until 1995.
