Château de Chantilly

The origins of the estate date back to 1484, when a predecessor building came into the possession of the Montmorency noble family. Between 1528 and 1551, the French military leader Anne de Montmorency extensively transformed the medieval castle into a Renaissance château. From 1643 to 1830, Chantilly served as the residence of the Dukes of Condé, a period interrupted by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. During this time, the château underwent Baroque alterations, and the famous garden architect André Le Nôtre significantly expanded the château park between 1670 and 1688. From 1775, an idealized rural village was created in the park, which later served as a model for Marie Antoinette's own Hameau. After the Grand Château was destroyed during the revolutionary period, Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, had a new château built in the historicist style on the old foundations between 1876 and 1882. In 1886, the Duke bequeathed the entire estate to the Institut de France.

The Château de Chantilly is located in Chantilly, in the Oise department, Picardy region, France, at an elevation of approximately 39 meters above sea level.

Today, the Château de Chantilly houses a museum, the Musée Condé, with one of the largest private art collections in the world. Additionally, the Petit Château contains a historical library with valuable manuscripts and books. The complex is accessible to visitors and offers, in addition to the château, the extensive park, the famous stables, and the racecourse.
