The castle of Charly, formerly Charleu, is an old fortified castle, from the 13th century, remodeled in the 18th century and mutilated in the 19th century, which stands in the commune of Charly in the Lyon metropolis in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The castle was listed as a historical monument by decree of June 7, 1926.

History+

In 1239, the land was acquired in allodial tenure by the Chapter of Saint-Just from Hugues de Chavannes. The castle is said to have served as a residence for Pope Innocent IV between 1244 and 1251. In 1314, the castellany was in the hands of Pierre Miriboilli. Around 1470, it passed by marriage to the Bocsozel family. Various families have owned the fief of Charly. 1501: this family takes possession of the fief. André, lord of Jarnosse and squire; he marries Charlotte du Crozel. mid-16th century: François, son of the previous, lord of Jarnosse and first panetier of the kingdom from 1560 to 1582; he marries Jeanne Faye. Gadagne Family

1760-1793: Paul (1731-1802), merchant; he marries Marie Garnier de Boissonne in 1759. More recent period

1793: the castle is seized and placed under sequestration. 1829: the Saint-Charles sisters transform the estate into a school. Today, the buildings are occupied by the private Saint-Charles kindergarten.

Description+

The initial construction dates back to the early 14th century. In the 16th century, the following description is found: "moated castle with four towers, bridges, dovecote, press, stables, barns, garden, orchard, fishpond, meadow, vineyards, arable land". Two square keeps, one crenellated, the other crowned with machicolations and provided with corner pepperpot turrets on corbels, are connected by a rectangular dwelling. The whole is preceded by an enclosure flanked on its north facade by two round corner turrets with machicolations that frame the entrance door surmounted by a bretèche. There were two other round towers, which protected a drawbridge, and moats, now filled in. The castle is private property and cannot be visited.
