Château de Chastellier-Barlot

The Château de Chastellier-Barlot is a historic château located in Le Poiré-sur-Velluire (now part of Les Velluire-sur-Vendée), in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France. It stands on a small hill overlooking the Marais Poitevin, near the Canal des Hollandais (Canal du Grand Port), with moats once fed by a waterway linked to the Vendée river.

The site has medieval origins as a feudal stronghold (the name “Chastellier” may recall earlier fortifications). The present building was largely reconstructed around 1593 by Antoine Barlot in the Renaissance style, while retaining the medieval turrets. The works are traditionally attributed to the architect Jean (Jehan) Morisson, who is also associated with the nearby Château de Terre-Neuve in Fontenay-le-Comte. The date 1593 is inscribed on the pediment of a dormer window.

The château is closely linked to the Barlot family, an old Bas-Poitou lineage. Its most famous member was Léon Barlot (born 1582), a military officer who served under Henri IV and Louis XIII, rising to high command and becoming seigneur of Chastellier-Barlot and other estates. Without direct heirs, the family sold the domain in 1694 to Jean de Creil, who took the title of Marquis de Creil-Bournezeau. After the French Revolution the property changed hands again.

From 1888 the buildings were converted into a dairy and cheese factory (laiterie-fromagerie), with the addition of a large industrial chimney; this activity ceased in 1928. Partial restoration of the main residential block began in the 1990s, including a new roof between the two remaining towers, though the building has not been fully returned to residential use.

The façades and roofs have been listed as a Monument historique since 23 September 1977. The château remains private property; its exterior can be viewed from the public road.
