Château de Châteaudun

The castle's origins date back to the early 10th century when, after its destruction by the Normans, a fortress was rebuilt under Thibaud le Tricheur. For over four centuries, Châteaudun was owned by the powerful Counts of Blois. In 1391, Louis of Orléans acquired the counties of Blois and Dunois. After his assassination, the possessions passed to his son, Charles d'Orléans, who spent 25 years in English captivity after the Battle of Agincourt. In 1439, Charles gifted the County of Dunois to his half-brother Jean d'Orléans, who began construction of the current castle in his capital Châteaudun in 1451. After Jean's death in 1468, the castle passed to the Longueville line of the House of Valois, who inhabited it until 1694.

The Château de Châteaudun is located in the commune of Châteaudun in the Eure-et-Loir department, Centre-Val de Loire region, France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 132 m above sea level.

Visitors can explore the castle today and experience its synthesis of Gothic and Renaissance styles. The well-preserved 12th-century keep, the rebuilt chapel, and the various wings with their architectural distinctiveness bear witness to the structure's long history.
