Château de Cinq-Mars

The Château de Cinq-Mars is a castle complex in the commune of Cinq-Mars-la-Pile in the French department of Indre-et-Loire. The ruin is an example of medieval defensive architecture, which was redesigned several times.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 12th century, with the first known feudal lord mentioned as early as 1050. The complex underwent extensions and alterations, particularly in the 13th, 15th, and 16th centuries. An event shaped the castle's fate in 1642, when its then-owner, Henri de Ruzé d'Effiat, a royal favorite, was executed. By order of Cardinal Richelieu, the fortress was subsequently razed.
