The Château de Condat, a former commandry of the Knights Hospitaller, is located in the commune of Condat-sur-Vézère in the French region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This fortified complex served various purposes in the Dordogne department.

History+

The commandry was founded in the 12th century, with a restoration taking place around 1540. Documented as "Hospitalis de Condato" since 1239, the Château de Condat was the most important Hospitaller commandry in Périgord. It served as a fortress, tithe barn, residence, pilgrim hostel, and hospital. During the Wars of Religion, the church of the complex was converted into a fortress by Captain Pouch, which was later besieged and captured by the Lord of Losse. During the Fronde, the castle also changed hands multiple times. After the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the commandry was plundered.
