History+

A fortress already existed on this site in the year 930, evidenced by a dated stone in the masonry of the entrance tower. The current castle was built in the 14th century, likely under Jean I, the then Lord of Bonneval. It underwent various modifications, including in the 18th and 19th centuries. The southwest façade between the two corner towers was redesigned around 1780. Restoration work took place in 1771/72 under the direction of architect Broussaud, followed by another restoration in 1900, which focused on the Renaissance courtyard. An old legend tells of an encounter with the devil, who once appeared disguised as a vagabond lord at the castle gates but was unmasked.
