Château de Crussol

The remains of the Castle can be visited

A 13th-century castle ruin, the Château de Crussol, rises above the Rhône Valley in France. Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, near Saint-Péray, the limestone castle offers a wide view over the landscape.

History+

The origins of settlement on the Crussol hill date back to Roman times, where a temple once stood. In the 5th century, this was supplemented by a fortified building, which was later abandoned. A first wooden fortress was probably built in the 10th century but was destroyed by fire. In the 12th century, Gerald Basset had a stone castle erected at this location to control the trade routes along the Rhône. In the late 15th century, the lords of Crussol were linked by marriage to the House of Uzès, whereupon the castle was abandoned in favor of the Château d'Uzès.
