Château de Fénelon

In Sainte-Mondane, in the French Dordogne department, stands the Château de Fénelon. It presents a formidable appearance overlooking the Dordogne Valley. Its fully preserved fortifications and its connection to François Fénelon make it special.

The castle was owned by the Fénelon family from the 14th century until 1780. During this period, François Fénelon, born in 1651, spent his childhood here. He later became the tutor of the Duke of Burgundy and authored the work "The Adventures of Telemachus" before being appointed Archbishop of Cambrai in 1695. In the 17th century, the Château underwent renovations, which preserved its defensive character. After 1780, the castle changed hands multiple times.
