The Château de Fougères is a castle in Brittany, France. This fortress, built on a natural rock outcrop in the midst of a swamp, is surrounded by a loop of the Nançon river, which serves as a natural moat. With its thirteen towers, it is considered one of Europe's largest medieval fortifications.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 11th century, when the House of Amboise erected a first wooden fort here. In 1166, this structure was destroyed after a siege by King Henry II of England. Immediately thereafter, Raoul II Baron de Fougères had the castle rebuilt.
