Château de Franchimont

The origins of the complex date back to the 11th or 12th century. The first written mention appears in 1156, during the tenure of Bishop Henry II of Liège. In the early 16th century, the castle was expanded with a defensive wall. Around 1650, the fortress lost its military significance as advancements in artillery made it vulnerable from surrounding hills. Subsequently, it primarily served as a prison, but occasionally also as a summer residence for nobles.
