Château de Freÿr

The estate's origins date back to the 14th century, when a castle secured a ford of the Meuse. However, this was destroyed in 1554 during the war between Henry II and Charles V. In its place, a Renaissance country house was built in 1571, whose east wing is still preserved today. In 1637, it was expanded into a four-winged building with an inner courtyard. In the 18th century, the castle was transformed into a ducal residence, with the south wing demolished and its portal integrated into the new grand hall. The castle served as a summer residence for the Dukes of Beaufort-Spontin. In 1675, ambassadors met here to sign a trade agreement, and King Louis XIV stayed at the castle during the siege of Dinant. Later, in 1769, two pavilions were erected on the site of the former south wing, and in 1770, the inner courtyard received its current paving with a wind rose. During World War I, the castle was occupied by German troops and used as a field hospital. In the late 1960s, the complex was restored. In 1995, the castle was affected by a Meuse flood.

Château de Freÿr is located in Hastière in the province of Namur, in the Walloon Region of Belgium, at an altitude of approximately 89 m above sea level.

The castle is privately owned but accessible to the public. Visitors can explore the magnificent interiors with Italian frescoes and the Renaissance fireplace in the dining room. The gardens house Belgium's oldest orangery with 300-year-old orange trees and six kilometers of arbors.
