Château de Gien
The Château de Gien, an impressive castle in Gien, Loiret department, is an outstanding example of the French Renaissance. It is perched on a rocky ridge on the right bank of the Loire and significantly shapes the town's appearance. Originally evolving from a hunting lodge, it is considered one of the early Loire castles built without Italian influences.
History+
The origins of the Château de Gien date back to an older hunting residence from the time of Charlemagne. After Anne de Beaujeu received the County of Gien in 1481 from her father Louis XI, she initiated an extensive reconstruction between 1494 and 1500. This replaced an earlier castle that had been severely damaged during the Hundred Years' War. After Anne's death, the castle initially remained in the possession of the House of Bourbon until Francis I annexed it to the royal domain in 1523 due to the betrayal of Charles III de Bourbon-Montpensier. In the following centuries, the Château hosted numerous important figures, including kings such as Henry II and Louis XIV. During the French Revolution, the county was dissolved, and the castle became the property of the Loiret department in 1823. It served as the seat of the sub-prefecture, the court, and even as a prison. In World War II, the castle survived the destruction of the town of Gien in 1940 almost unscathed.
