Château de Gy

The history of the Château de Gy is closely linked to the Archbishops of Besançon, who used it as their seat for centuries. In 1259, during a conflict between Jean I de Chalon and Archbishop Guillaume II de la Tour, the castle was besieged, captured, and completely destroyed. A settlement led to the lifting of the excommunication of the attackers. At the end of the 14th century, Archbishop Guillaume de Vergy became embroiled in a dispute with Philip the Bold over the right to mint coins, which led to a siege of the castle. Archbishop Quentin Ménard also resided in Gy from 1439 after disputes with the citizens of Besançon. He reinforced the castle with two square towers. Around 1500, François de Busleyden, also an archbishop, rebuilt the castle after it had been damaged. Cardinal de Choiseul significantly shaped the castle's current appearance in the 18th century through extensive renovations, transforming it into a princely residence. The castle survived the French Revolution unscathed. In the 19th century, it temporarily served as a school and later as a secondary school.

The Château de Gy is located in the commune of Gy in the French department of Haute-Saône, in the Franche-Comté region. It stands at an elevation of approximately 251 meters above sea level.

The castle can be visited today, offering visitors insights into its long history and architecture. Its current appearance is the result of several construction phases, bearing the marks of various archbishops and their eras.
