Château de Haute-Sage

The Château de Haute-Sage is a historic château and wine estate located in the commune of Haux, in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France, in the Entre-deux-Mers area. It stands on a height of the hillside overlooking the Garonne, about one kilometre south of the village.
The building has the general appearance of the late 16th or early 17th century and may incorporate earlier elements; a small square turret housing a spiral staircase is regarded as a possible indicator of an older origin. It consists of a central block flanked by two square pavilions. A dependency extends the south façade, and further outbuildings stand perpendicular to the main house. Architectural features include a doorway framed by pilasters and surmounted by a dentil cornice. Some openings date from the 18th century. A chapel is said once to have stood at the southern end of the eastern dependencies.
The château was inscribed as a Monument historique on 29 August 1984. The protection covers the façades and roofs as well as the chimneys of the two ground-floor salons and the kitchen. It remains private property.
Today the estate produces wines under the Cadillac (sweet/liquoreux) and Premières Côtes de Bordeaux (moelleux) appellations. The restored château is also offered as high-end furnished accommodation (five-star rating), with four bedrooms, a swimming pool and fine views over the vineyards and countryside. It is noted for its somewhat Italianate character and for the women who have shaped its history.
