Château de Hautefort

The origins of the site date back to the 9th century, when a fortress of the Viscount of Limoges stood here. In the 12th century, the property belonged to the de Born family, which included the troubadour Bertran de Born. His political machinations led to the destruction of the castle by Henry II of England. In 1630, the later owner, Marquis Jacques-François de Gontaut-Hautefort, initiated a transformation of the complex into a castle. These works were completed in 1680 under the direction of the Parisian architect Jean Maigret.
