Château de Hautepenne

The origins of Château de Hautepenne date back to the 14th century. Around 1330, Lambert de Harduemont, possibly from the House of Warfusée, is believed to have erected an initial fortified complex on this site. This served William I of La Marck as a temporary refuge during his conflict with Louis de Bourbon, Prince-Bishop of Liège, after William's nearby Château d'Aigremont had been destroyed. In 1409, the seigneury of Hautepenne passed to the Berlaymont family, who held the property until 1653. Subsequently, the estate came into the possession of Louis Philippe d’Egmont, Prince de Gane. From 1752 to 1982, the castle belonged to the Dukes of Aremberg. After World War I, it was confiscated by the Belgian state in 1919, acquired by Antoine France in 1926, and has been in the possession of his heirs, the Galand family, since 1945.
