Château de Hohenfels

The first documented mention of Hohenfels Castle dates back to 1293. It was originally owned by the Ettendorf family until the mid-14th century. In 1369, three-quarters of the castle were sold to Ulrich von Finstingen, a bailiff of Alsace. Through the marriage of his daughter Klara to Count Emich VI of Leiningen, half of the castle came into his possession in 1383. After a presumed destruction by the citizens of Strasbourg and Hagenau, the complex was rebuilt and subsequently experienced numerous changes of feudal lords, including the families Lichtenberg, Ochsenstein, and Bitsch, as well as the Diocese of Strasbourg and the Fleckenstein.
