Château de Jarnioux

The origins of the Château de Jarnioux date back to the late 13th or early 14th century when it was founded by the de Gleteins family. This family, who referred to themselves as Lords of Jarnioux from 1286, only later paid homage to the Sire de Beaujeu for their property in 1320 and 1380. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands, including the Propières, Henry, Ménardeau, Lostanges, Sahuc de Planhol, and Clavière families. The Clavière family, whose descendants still own the castle today, acquired it through marriage in 1779. The complex was partially listed as a historical monument in 1966, with particular protection given to its facades and roofs.

The Château de Jarnioux is situated at an elevation of approximately 331 meters above sea level in the commune of Jarnioux, in the Rhône department of the Rhône-Alpes region in France. It is located on the edge of the village on a ridge overlooking the Morgon and Ombre valleys.

Visitors to the Château de Jarnioux can explore the historic site today. The castle features a pentagonal enceinte dominated by a large cylindrical keep. Other round towers secure the corners. A square barbican with two round flanking towers and a gate tower, which once housed a drawbridge, complements the complex. Above the main entrance is a castle chapel. The buildings display a mix of different styles, including the original construction of golden Beaujolais stones from the 13th century and later additions such as six towers, including the 30-meter-high keep. A Renaissance wing is attributed to the architect Philibert Delorme. Traces of the former drawbridge are still visible, and the coats of arms of the Henry family can be seen above the gate.
