Château de Javarzay
The Château de Javarzay in Chef-Boutonne is a castle complex in the French department of Deux-Sèvres, which incorporates the remains of an older fortress. It combines elements of the Renaissance with medieval defensive architecture.
History+
The original castle complex consisted of an enceinte flanked by twelve towers, of which only two remain today. In 1514, the castle was rebuilt by members of the House of Rochechouart. The property changed hands multiple times. The Rochefoucauld-Roye family acquired the castle in 1655 from François de Rochechouart of Chandeniers. Later, it came into the possession of Jérôme Phélypeaux, Count of Pontchartrain and minister of Louis XIV, as well as Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, the lawyer of Louis XVI.
