Château de Koerich

The origins of Château de Koerich date back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries, when Wirich I, Lord of Koerich and Seneschal of Luxembourg, initiated its construction. Around 1300, the castle underwent its first transformation from Romanesque to Gothic style. Significant extensions were made between 1380 and 1385 under Gilles d'Autel-Koerich, who added a Gothic residential building and two rectangular towers to the south facade. Of these two towers, only the southwestern one remains today, housing a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael on the ground floor, hence popularly known as the “Chapel Tower.” In the 16th century, specifically between 1580 and 1585, the castle was renovated in Renaissance style under Jacques II de Raville-Bassompierre and transformed into a feudal manor. After 1755, Château de Koerich was no longer inhabited and progressively fell into disrepair, becoming uninhabitable. In 1950, initial safeguarding work was carried out under the then-mayor Pierre Flammang. Since 1993, the “Käercher Schlassfrenn” association has been dedicated to preserving the complex, with restoration efforts beginning in 1995 and intended to continue until 2015.

The castle ruin of Château de Koerich is located in the municipality of Koerich in the canton of Capellen, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It stands at an elevation of approximately 299 meters above sea level.
