Château de l'Aubraye

The castle was built on the foundations of a medieval fortress. Between 1575 and 1577, it underwent extensive renovation in the Renaissance style. The first known owner was Nicolas Suriette; the last of the Suriette family, Louis, was responsible for the Renaissance alterations. Later, the estate passed through the hands of the Suzannet, du Bois de la Touche, and Crugy de Marcillac families. In 1791, amidst the French Revolution, Georges Clemenceau's great-grandmother acquired the castle, which has remained in the Clemenceau family's possession ever since. The later Prime Minister of France spent parts of his childhood here. Since February 1, 1928, the Château de l'Aubraye has been a protected historical monument.

The Château de l'Aubraye is situated in the commune of La Réorthe in the Vendée department, a region in western France belonging to Pays de la Loire. It lies at an elevation of approximately 55 meters above sea level.

The castle is currently privately owned and not accessible to the public. It is a quadrangular complex with a tower at each corner and is surrounded by deep moats, giving it a fortified appearance despite its Renaissance features. The complex is set within a park-like landscape of trees and meadows.
