Château de l'Etenduère

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château de l’Étenduère is a ruined seigneurial residence located in Les Herbiers, in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France, to the south-west of the town near the Buzinière area.

The estate belonged to the House of des Herbiers, marquises of l’Estenduère, an old noble family of Poitou and Aunis whose origins date back to the 11th century. One of its most illustrious members was Henri-François des Herbiers, marquis de l’Estenduère, a French naval commander who fought at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747.

First mentioned in 1375 as a simple residence belonging to Jean des Herbiers, it became a noble residence (hôtel noble) in 1484. In 1622 it was fortified with gunports, a drawbridge and machicolations. Following a wealthy marriage in 1705, Alexis-Auguste des Herbiers greatly enlarged and embellished the château, making it one of the most luxurious seigneurial buildings in the province between the 17th and 18th centuries.

During the night of 31 January to 1 February 1794, the castle was burned by the “Colonnes Infernales” under General Grignon during the War in the Vendée. Only fragile sections of the walls remained.

In 2019 the site was selected as a regional winner of the Mission Bern – Fondation du Patrimoine. Subsequent consolidation and enhancement works have stabilised the ruins. Today the remains can be freely discovered via a heritage trail with explanatory panels. Guided tours are offered in season, and the site forms part of a cycling loop linking three historic châteaux in Les Herbiers.
