The Château de l'Ortenbourg, a prominent castle ruin in Alsace, rises on a ridge above Scherwiller. As a spur castle, it offers a wide view over the Upper Rhine Plain and is an example of early Gothic castle architecture in the region.

History+

The Ortenberg Castle was first documented in 1166. However, the structure visible today was newly built between 1262 and 1265 under Rudolf von Habsburg, who resided here until his election as king in 1273. In 1293, Otto III von Ochsenstein besieged the castle from the neighboring Ramstein. The Habsburgs sold the castle and the village of Scherwiller in 1314 to the Strasbourg family Müllenheim. Lorraine troops damaged the complex in 1374.
