Château de la Bassetière

To be privately owned

The Château de la Bassetière is a historic private residence located in the commune of Saint-Julien-des-Landes, in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France. It lies in the western part of the department, in a rural setting between the roads linking Vairé, La Mothe-Achard and Saint-Julien-des-Landes.

The château is an ancestral seat of the Morisson de la Bassetière family, who have owned it continuously for nearly five centuries. The family descends from a Scottish clan (Morrison) that settled in France during the Hundred Years’ War. The earliest traces of their presence in the area date from 1416. Over time they held several fiefs in the region (including the Filotière, Sauzinière, Naullière and Brandeau), but La Bassetière remained their principal and enduring property.

The château already appears on the 18th-century Cassini maps. Before the Revolution it formed the centre of a network of farms and secondary residences controlled by the family. It was partially burned during the French Revolution and was rebuilt shortly afterwards by Constant Morisson de la Bassetière, while retaining a wing from the 16th century.

The domain was once considerably larger, extending over the territory of two or three communes. It still comprises several hundred hectares of agricultural land, meadows, woods and associated farms, forming a substantial working rural estate. The château remains private property and is not open to the public; it continues to be owned and occupied by the Morisson de la Bassetière family.
