Château de la Buzine

The history of the estate dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries, when it belonged to the Diodé family and stretched from Saint-Menet to Les Camoins. In 1457, Guillaume Cabofigue acquired a large part of the property, while the southern part went to Guillaume Reynard, who named it La Reynarde. Henry de Buzens, a squire from Marseille, renamed it "La Buzine" in 1667. In the 18th century, it was a bastide owned by the de Flotte family, whose property was confiscated during the Revolution. Pierre-Hilaire Curtil, a Marseille architect, bought the estate in 1865, demolished the old bastide, and erected the current castle in an eclectic style. After its completion in 1869, Curtil sold it to the merchant Victor Régis. Several changes of ownership followed until Marcel Pagnol bought the estate in 1941 to create a film city there. During World War II, it was requisitioned by the German army and later served various military and civilian purposes before falling into disrepair. Pagnol sold it to a developer in 1973. An association campaigned for the preservation of the castle, which was listed as a historical monument in 1997. After extensive restoration, which began in 2006, it was reopened in 2011 as the "Maison des cinématographies de la Méditerranée."

The castle is located in Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 119 m above sea level.

Today, the Château de la Buzine serves as a museum and is accessible to visitors. It houses a cinema hall, exhibition rooms, and a library-videotheque.
