Château Du Portereau

The Château du Portereau is a historic manor located in the commune of Vertou, in the Loire-Atlantique department of the Pays de la Loire region in western France, on the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise, between the Muscadet vineyards and the river, about 15 minutes from Nantes.

The name “Portereau” recalls an ancient landing place or small port on the Sèvre. The building itself dates back more than 400 years, to the 16th century. Over the centuries it served as a residence for successive families. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it became the hunting estate of the Lefèvre-Utile family, founders of the famous LU biscuit brand. The family later donated it to the Confrérie des Montfortains. From 2003 until around 2023–2024 the château housed the headquarters of the furniture and décor company Maisons du Monde.

In 2024 the estate was acquired by the Ben Touch group and underwent a major renovation (approximately 9–10 million euros). It reopened in May 2026 as a four-star hotel. The domain covers about three hectares and now offers 26 rooms and suites distributed between the main château and the former stables (Pavilion), a restaurant, a riverside guinguette, an orangerie suitable for events (up to 400 guests), a spa, an outdoor swimming pool and a cottage. The park is notable for its classified plane trees nearly three centuries old, a bicentennial oak, an original fountain and a well rediscovered during the works.

The château remains a significant example of the historic country residences (“folies”) along the Sèvre and now functions as a luxury hospitality and events venue that respects its architectural and landscape heritage.
