Château de la Gaubertie
The Château de la Gaubertie is a French castle in the commune of Saint-Martin-des-Combes in the Aquitaine region. It dates from the 15th century and was rebuilt several times in the 17th and 19th centuries.
The castle is located in the Périgord Pourpre landscape, in the south of the Dordogne department, 500 meters west of the departmental road 21. It is situated on a hill between the villages of Clermont-de-Beauregard and Saint-Martin-des-Combes and is privately owned. Since 1993, some parts of the castle have been listed as a historical monument (Monument historique).
Opposite Clermont Castle, on the other side of the valley through which the les Carbonnières stream flows, there initially existed a fortified house called La Borie, which was owned by the Lords of Clermont. Gaubertie Castle was built on the site of this fortified farmhouse at the end of the 15th century.
It was damaged during the Huguenot Wars and had to be restored in the 17th century. A chapel was added at that time. At the end of the 19th century, the interiors and outbuildings were renovated.
The philosopher Maine de Biran visited the castle several times, as did Charles de Foucauld in 1913 during his several-month stay in France.
Architecture+
Gaubertie Castle consists of a northeast-southwest oriented main building from the 16th century and is flanked by three towers: a square one in the south corner and two round towers in the west and north corners. Another turret once adorned the eastern corner. The main building and the towers are equipped with machicolations.
Thirty meters east of the castle lies the chapel with a square turret and a Gothic dormer window. To the north of it are the important farm buildings of the castle.
