Château de la Haute-Cour

The Château de la Haute-Cour is a private château located in the commune of Réaumur, in the Bocage vendéen of the Vendée department, Pays de la Loire region, in western France. It stands in the village centre next to the fortified 15th-century church of Saint-Pierre.
The seigneurie of la Haute-Cour is of older origin, while the present château is essentially an 18th-century residence. In 1860 a subterranean refuge (souterrain-refuge) was discovered on the estate by the local historian and politician Léon Audé (mayor of La Roche-sur-Yon and secretary-general of the Vendée).
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the property belonged to Raoul de Vexiau (1841–1929), mayor of Réaumur and president of the Conseil général de la Vendée in 1918. From 1929 to 1949 it was occupied by his adoptive son, Vicomte Jean de Tinguy de Vexiau (1895–1987, born Tinguy de Nesmy), who served as mayor of Réaumur from 1930 to 1945, together with his wife Marie Savary de Beauregard. At that time the domain included a large garden and farm buildings with dairy cattle.
The château remains private property and is not regularly open to the public. It forms part of the historic fabric of Réaumur, closely linked to the neighbouring fortified church and to the local noble families of the Bocage vendéen.
