La Madeleine Castle, also called Palais Briau, is located in Varades, in the Loire-Atlantique department in France.

History+

The castle was built by the architect Edouard Moll for the engineer and entrepreneur François Briau, who built railway lines for western France (including the single-track line Nantes-Pornic) and was mayor of Varades. After his economic success, he had La Madeleine Castle built in the style of a Palladian villa in 1853. His daughter Berthe, sole heiress, married the engineer Octave-Prudent Crouan, a first cousin of the shipowner Fernand Crouan from Nantes, who equipped the Belem and owned Les Jamonières Castle in Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu, La Houssinière Castle in Nantes, and Pierre-Levée Castle in the Princé forest in Chéméré. Octave-Prudent Crouan-Briau in turn became mayor of Varades in 1912. Another of his cousins was a notary in Sainte-Pazanne and owned the Nau city palace. The castle was bought by Léon Slove in 1920. His descendants inherited it in 1982, including Cyril de La Patellière. The building was registered as a historical monument in 1998.
