Château de Loches

The Château de Loches, an impressive castle complex, is perched on a rocky plateau on the left bank of the Indre river, above the French town of Loches. It is considered one of Europe's best-preserved medieval architectural ensembles and is renowned for its historic keep, one of the oldest in France.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 11th century, when the massive keep was constructed. Over the centuries, the complex was expanded and redesigned, incorporating various architectural styles. As early as 1840, the collegiate church was designated a Monument historique, followed by the keep in 1862. The Royal Gate was added to the list of historical monuments in 1886, and the Logis Royal received its monument status in 1889. The complex also served as a prison for a long time, which contributed to the good preservation of some parts.
Location+
The Château de Loches is located in Loches, in the Indre-et-Loire department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 126 meters above sea level.
