Château de Lucens

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century when it was built as an episcopal residence. In the 16th century, the structure underwent expansions and alterations after it was designated as the seat of a bailiwick. The 26-meter-high round keep in the Savoyard style, along with adjacent walls and buildings, date from the medieval founding period. During Bernese rule, the irregularly shaped palas, characterized by oriel turrets and a double curtain wall, was constructed. In 1798, the castle became property of the canton, but was sold in 1803 and has since changed hands multiple times. A prominent owner was Sir Adrian Conan Doyle, son of the writer Arthur Conan Doyle.
