History+

Presumably built around 1200 by the bailiffs of Wasselnheim, Lutzelhardt Castle was first documented in 1250. In 1297, it became the bailiwick castle of the Duke of Lorraine. Parts of the castle were gradually sold off starting in 1363, including to Heinrich von Fleckenstein and in 1395 to Count Philipp of Nassau-Saarbrücken. In 1397, the castle was set on fire by citizens of Strasbourg. Further shares changed hands in 1450 to Wirich Puller von Hohenburg. In 1462, Lutzelhardt was besieged and stormed by the city of Wissembourg to apprehend three individuals. In 1538, the entire complex passed to Count Jakob of Zweibrücken-Bitsch and, after the extinction of this line in 1550, to the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg.
