In Luynes in the Indre-et-Loire department, the Château de Luynes, a historic castle, overlooks a side valley north of the Loire. Once known as the seat of the Barony and later County of Maillé, the complex shows its medieval fortress architecture.

History+

The origins of the Château de Luynes date back to the 11th century. After its destruction in 1096 by the Count of Anjou, it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 12th century by the Lord of Maillé. Under the name Castle Maillé, it played a role in the Hundred Years' War. In 1619, the estate passed into the possession of Charles d’Albert, the Lord of Luynes in Provence and a confidant of King Louis XIII. He obtained from the king the elevation of the complex to a peerage duchy under the name Luynes.
