Château de Mersch

The origins of the castle date back to the 13th century when it was built by Theoderich, a knight in the service of Countess Ermesinde of Luxembourg. In 1574, a renovation in Renaissance style was carried out under Paul von der Veltz. In 1603, the complex was destroyed by Dutch forces but subsequently rebuilt. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered damage again in 1635. Around 1700, Johann-Friedrich von Elter undertook restoration work. At the end of the 19th century, in 1898, the Sonnenberg-Reinach family sold the estate to the businessman Schwartz-Hallinger.
