History+

The origins of Château de Modave can be traced back to the 13th century, when it was likely built as a tower fortress above the Hoyoux valley. Walther von Modave is mentioned as the first Lord of Modave in 1233. His son Heinrich, a marshal to the Prince-Bishop of Liège, Jean d'Enghien, was involved in the so-called Cow War. After the death of Jean von Modave in 1533, who remained childless, the castle passed to his nephew Jean de Haultepenne. His daughter Catherine married Nicolas de Saint-Fontaine, bringing the estate into his family.
