The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Château de Montfaucon, an imposing 11th-century castle ruin, majestically rises in the Franche-Comté region of France. Once the seat of the influential Montfaucon family, it still bears witness to a turbulent past and is a registered historical monument.

History+

The origins of the Château de Montfaucon date back to the 11th century, when Conon de Montfaucon, a vassal of Count Renaud I of Burgundy, had a first wooden fortress built on a rocky spur. In the late 13th century, this was replaced by a stone fortress, which Amédée III de Montfaucon had constructed on the current site. The Montfaucon family evolved into one of the most powerful noble families in the region. In 1477, the castle escaped destruction by the army of Louis XI and later passed by inheritance to the Chalon-Arlay family. After the Ten Years' War (1634-1644), the castle was finally abandoned. Since 1984, the ruin has been owned by the municipality of Montfaucon, which is carrying out extensive restoration work.
