History+
The estate's origins trace back to a medieval country seat acquired by the ancestors of the Contades family in 1676. In 1772, Field Marshal Louis-Georges-Erasme de Contades, after retiring from active service at the age of 68, began construction of his retirement residence. The plans for the new castle were drawn by Parisian architect Jean Benoît Vincent Barré. Some elements from the previous 16th-century structure, including the chapel and two round towers flanking the outbuildings, were incorporated into the new construction. Building work continued until 1776 and was meticulously documented by the Marshal's eldest son, providing detailed insights today into the origin of materials and transportation methods. Primarily regional craftsmen and local farmers were involved in the construction.
