The origins of the Château de Monthoux date back to the mid-13th century, when it was built as a fortified complex. It served as the center of a châtellenie, an administrative district, and played an important role in the regional power structure. In 1532, the estate was sold by Michel de Viry to Michel Guillet, whose family subsequently adopted the name Guillet de Monthoux.
