Château de Montpoupon

The origins of Château de Montpoupon date back to the 12th century, with its name referring to the Germanic tribe of the Poppones who settled on the hill during the Carolingian era. A first castle complex was built in the 13th century, of which only the towers remain today. From the 14th to the 17th century, the castle was owned by the de Prie family, who were rewarded with important offices for their loyalty to the House of Valois. In the 14th and 16th centuries, the complex was adapted and expanded to meet the demands of warfare. After the male line of the de Prie family died out in the 18th century, the estate fell into disrepair until it was acquired in 1763 by a mayor of Orléans, who had restoration plans that were thwarted by the French Revolution. Around 1840, the current outbuildings were constructed, and in 1857, Jean Baptiste de la Motte Saint Pierre acquired the Château, having it restored in the Renaissance style around 1900. It has been registered as a Monument historique since 1930.

Château de Montpoupon is located in Montpoupon, in the Indre-et-Loire department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. It is situated at an elevation of approx. 106 m above sea level.

Today, Château de Montpoupon serves as a museum. Visitors can explore the entrance pavilion and parts of the residential wing. The outbuildings house a hunting museum, which illuminates the history and practice of hunting. The historic kitchen, laundry room, stables, and saddlery are also accessible, offering a glimpse into past castle life.
